On Ventura Between Fulton and Woodman, the New Tenants Are Keeping the Old Names

On Ventura Between Fulton and Woodman, the New Tenants Are Keeping the Old Names

In his August newsletter column, Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association president Matt Epstein described what Mistral had meant for thirty-eight years. The owner made the room feel like his living room. A server named Raoul seemed to know your order before you gave it. Then the doors closed, paper went up in the windows, and a renovation began. "I've loved this restaurant my whole life," Epstein wrote, counting down to the reopening.

Mistral reopened on Monday, August 10, 2026. The way it came back fits the pattern on the whole stretch of Ventura Boulevard from Fulton Avenue to Woodman Avenue this fall. Most of the newcomers are moving into rooms and corners the neighborhood already knows, and they are keeping those histories in plain view.

Mistral, kept and renewed

Henri Abergel opened Mistral in 1988 and ran it until he retired in 2025. Restaurateur Jonah Freedman, who also owns Greekman's in Silver Lake, took over in late 2025 with business partner and culinary director Josh Migdal. For a while they kept the menu exactly as it was, then closed briefly to plan the next version. Epstein noted that the new owners "kept the food and most of the faces" through the transition.

Freedman has said plainly what they were aiming for:

"We really feel like this is an homage to the original Mistral rather than just an updated Mistral."

The menu backs that up. The tuna tartare, the crab cakes, the Mistral Caesar and the French onion soup all survived the remodel, along with the duck. The changes are in the finish. The Caesar now comes with baguette chips, the French onion soup has a Comté grilled cheese on top, and the mussels are cooked in sungold tomatoes and gewürztraminer. Freedman describes adding more acid throughout, from vinegars and citrus zest to orange oil, to lighten a cuisine he calls "sauce-heavy." Steak frites now comes four ways, from an 8-ounce hanger steak up to a 24-ounce côte de boeuf for two. Epstein spotted one new item, a Mistral Burger.

The room follows the same approach. It now has custom-made red leather booths, artwork by the French American painter Guy Buffet, glass chandeliers and warm wood paneling. Freedman describes the result as feeling "both totally preserved and totally fresh." Sommelier Julia Djaoui runs the wine list. The full bar serves a gin-and-lemon cocktail named the Mistral and a martini made with onion brine.

A raw bar named for the founder

The second piece of the Mistral project shows the pattern even more clearly. Freedman and Migdal are building Henri's, a small raw bar named for Henri Abergel, in the space attached to Mistral that used to be its private dining room. It will serve oysters, cocktails, and raw and cooked seafood. Freedman described the setup he has in mind, with a cocktail and oysters on one side before a reservation next door, or the other way around.

Eater LA's fall preview, published September 10, lists Henri's opening as "late 2026" and gives no specific date. So the new owners have kept the founder's restaurant and are now naming a second room after him.

The stretch, address by address

Lay the stretch out address by address and the same pattern shows up at most stops. This is how it stands as of late September 2026, based on Eater LA, What Now LA and the SOHA newsletter.

Address Before Now Status as of Sept. 30, 2026

Storefronts that still show their past

At 13711 Ventura, near Woodman, Florahound has taken over the storefront with the large painting on its front, which Epstein notes some neighbors will remember as Green Queen. The painting is still there, and the business inside is different. Florahound is a rare-plant shop built around the work of Leon Massoth, a horticulturist who has spent decades finding, growing and studying rare tropical plants. Many of them were raised slowly from collected seed. The shop's own definition of "rare" is plants that are not mass-produced, are grown in small numbers, or come from lineages that are hard to source. "Some may only appear once," the site says. Parking is in the back.

At the corner of Ventura and Woodman, chef Ludo Lefebvre of Petit Trois has signed a lease on the corner restaurant space that Samos has occupied for the past few years. The September SOHA newsletter reports that the plan is a sandwich concept, that it is still very early, and that Lefebvre asked to check back in about a month, once he has a clearer vision and a name. No name or opening date has been announced yet.

At the east end, the corner of Ventura and Fulton is turning into Fulton Crossing, a mixed-use building across from Casa Vega with shops on the ground floor and offices above. A vintage Airstream trailer is parked on the corner to mark the site. Its anchor, Blank Street Coffee, has moved into the corner. In September Epstein wrote that it was already drawing a line out the door and described the interior as design-forward, with distinctive furniture. The project gives Casa Vega, one of the stretch's best-known landmarks, a new neighbor across the street.

A little farther along, just past Casa Vega, LLAMA has opened at 13443 Ventura. It offers art and sewing classes, workshops, birthday parties and Grown-Up Nights for adults. The studio lists daily hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Epstein called it a good fit for a block that "could use more places to simply make something."

The one address still waiting

Boneyard Bistro at 13539 Ventura served its last meal on September 12, ending more than twenty years in Sherman Oaks. What Now LA described its menu as Southern-style barbecue with Santa Maria-style grilling alongside eclectic bistro dishes. In his farewell, owner and chef Aaron Robins thanked everyone who had "shared a meal, celebrated a milestone, brought their family and friends." He said he is taking a break from restaurants and pointed to a next chapter he has not yet described.

The coverage of the closure does not name a next tenant for 13539. On a stretch where nearly every other space has a named successor or a direct link to its past, this is the one address where the next occupant has not been reported.

What hasn't been announced yet

Several details on this stretch are still pending as of September 30, 2026:

  • An opening date for Henri's, which Eater LA lists only as late 2026
  • A name and timeline for Ludo Lefebvre's project at the former Samos corner
  • A reported next tenant for the former Boneyard Bistro space
  • A full tenant roster for Fulton Crossing, whose leasing materials list a 6,181-square-foot building at 13273 Ventura, with Apollo Bagels named as a second anchor alongside Blank Street Coffee

Epstein's September column treats the Ludo corner as one to watch. Because Lefebvre said he would come back in about a month, the next SOHA Comings & Goings column is the likeliest place for the name to appear first.

October 18, farther west

The 34th Sherman Oaks Street Fair takes over Ventura Boulevard on Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free, according to the Sherman Oaks Encino Chamber of Commerce. The fair runs between Kester Avenue and Van Nuys Boulevard, which puts it west of the Fulton-to-Woodman stretch.

The fair also falls within Gilbert Perez Bar's projected October opening. The new cocktail bar from Max Reis and Matt Egan sits above Daisy Margarita Bar at 14633 Ventura. Eater LA describes it as a blend of tropical cocktail culture and a Mexican rum bar, with a strict no-photography policy.

Joan Duffy spent years as a home builder, so the way Mistral's room was rebuilt to feel "both totally preserved and totally fresh" is the kind of craftsmanship she pays attention to on Ventura and on the streets around it. If you live near Fulton or Woodman and would like a measured view of how these changes on the Boulevard relate to your own home, Joan Duffy would be glad to talk it through. Let's Connect.
